If you don’t already know, Garrick and its founder David Brailsford are strong advocates for the return of British watchmaking to its former glory, with the idea to make as much as possible on British soil, with true British style and with a combination of relative accessibility and high-end finishing. Because of that, it has long caught the attention of Leicester-based, indie-specialist The Limited Edition. And both parties are joining forces to release a new and exclusive edition, the Ice-Blue Garrick S4.
The S4 is Garrick’s entry-level watch and despite a fairly more accessible price tag, it remains a model with Britain in mind. It upholds classical English watchmaking traditions in terms of design, and by creating as much as possible in the brand’s workshops. Garrick’s craftsmen do dials, hands, movement parts, and of course finishing internally. It’s a watch with some refinement and modernity too. 42mm in diameter for a fairly controlled height of 10mm, its case is 904L steel and a step bezel and a cool onion crown.
Under the caseback is a movement with very well-known roots, in order to control the price. Based on the ETA 6498 Unitas architecture, Garrick has meticulously reworked it with a frosted three-quarter plate, a new balance cock and a traditional barrel/crown wheel cover, which is engraved by hand. It features a screwed balance and is regulated in-house to an average deviation of +3 seconds a day. It is here presented in a rhodium colour.
Now let’s move to the dial, which is what makes this Garrick S4 for The Limited Edition unique. Typical of the British school of watchmaking, with layers and textures. Here, the lower part has a rose-engine turned guilloché motif with a unique ice-blue colour. It’s framed by a rhodium-plated and brushed chapter ring with black hand-inked Roman numerals. Time is read by Garrick’s Maritime hour and minute hands.
