In case anyone was wondering, we were very well aware of the incredible story of Furlan Marri and its Mecha-Quartz chronograph collection launched last year. The way this brand launched itself on the scene was pretty hard to ignore. And what kept us presenting it to you was the issue it came with a quartz movement. So why start writing about them now? Simple: Furlan Marri is launching a fully mechanical three-hander which looks just spectacular! Just look at it, and you can see why we’re getting excited at the MONOCHROME headquarters! This is the new Furlan Marri Ref. 2116-A Black Sector, the next chapter in this very young brand.
The story of Furlan Marri reads like a children’s story. Two close friends, Andrea Furlan and Hamad Al-Marri, with a shared passion for watchmaking and entrepreneurship, wanted to combine their strengths to create a watch brand that tells a real story; a story of craftsmanship, a strong character and an uncompromising experience. Launched last year, the brand caused a huge storm with its mecha-quartz-driven chronograph models. It even landed them the Horological Revelation prize during the 2021 GPHG with the “Mr. Grey”. To say it went well would be a bit of an understatement. Furlan Marri basically blew up!
This new Ref. 2116-A Black Sector continues along the same path with several important updates. Furlan Marri states that its watches are “crafted with care, designed for details” and it’s very visible in the new model. With a very classical-styled stainless steel case of 37.5mm wide and 10.5mm tall, it will be an absolute joy to wear. The case is finished with cow-horn lugs attached to the case with a visible bridge inscribed with the reference number. The finishing shows a mix of brushing and polishing, and the dial is topped with a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Round the back, we see a decagonal-shaped screw-in caseback with circular brushing and polishing. The old-school way!
Arguably the best part of the Furlan Marri Ref. 2116-A Black Sector is its dial and hands. The very classic sector-style dial finished in deep black with silver or light-grey printed tracks and scales looks simply stunning. It harks back to the style of the 1930s and 1940s we know and love. Breguet-style numerals at every corner, leaf-shaped hour and minutes hands and a needle-like central seconds hand complete the look. Between 4 and 5 o’clock you can see the reference number printed on one of the tracks.
Powering the Furlan Marri Ref. 2116-A Black Sector is an automatic movement by La Joux-Perret. Not much is communicated about this movement yet, other than the fact it is a time-only movement based on the manufacturer’s G100 ébauche, that it uses 24 jewels and provides a power reserve of 68 hours – it’s a movement that has been created as a strong alternative to ETA and Sellita. It is fitted with a tungsten rotor with a palladium coating and Furlan Marri engravings. The movement is a top-grade one, which means finishings like Côtes de Genève, blued screws (although unlikely to be heat-treated blue) and snailing. None of this can be seen, as the solid caseback protects it from prying eyes – but that’s in line with the vintage concept of the watch.
The new Furlan Marri Ref. 2116-A Black Sector shows all the facets of a true horological gem. It looks excellent, features a mechanical movement with very good specs, and is affordable as well. How affordable? A rather surprising CHF 1,250 (excl. taxes) during the pre-order phase, before taxes. For that, you get the watch with this black sector dial, a curved black leather strap and straight cognac leather strap, and a travel pouch. The pre-order phase starts on the 24th of June and will run for 10 days. Furlan Marri states that it will produce as many as are ordered, but no more after the pre-order phase is over. There will be new references coming later in the year but no details are known as yet. We’re quite excited about all this and are looking forward to spending some time with it in the near future.
